How Intrusion Alarm Systems Work

In this blog post, we will talk about Intrusion Alarm Systems and how intrusion alarm systems work.

When applied on its own or as part of an integrated security solution, an intrusion alarm system is utilized to detect the presence of intruders, and send alerts in the event of a security incident.

But how does it all work you’re asking? It’s pretty simple, really. Let’s have a look.

Control Panel

To begin, every intrusion alarm system is equipped with its brain, the control panel. The control panel is typically located in an electrical room, telephone room, or other secure area of the building, unless it’s built-in to a keypad. Almost all of the devices that are connected to an intrusion system can be connected to the control panel by wired or wireless communication.

When your intrusion alarm system is armed, and a secured door is opened, motion is detected, the sound of breaking glass is heard, or any other device is tripped, the alarm panel wakes up and produces its desired action such as a siren or strobe, or a silent alarm, which typically includes the notification of the alarm monitoring station. This notification signal is sent to the alarm monitoring station via phone line, cellular, IP, or other approved ULC method of communication.

Alternatively, these notifications can also be sent to your mobile device or tablet in addition to, or instead of, being sent to an alarm monitoring station.

Keypads

Most alarm systems have some form of keypad, which is used to turn the system on and off, this is also known as arming and disarming. The keypad isn’t the brains of the system it’s simply how you interact with it.

The keypad activates and deactivates certain devices that are connected to the security alarm system. These devices include things such as door contacts, motion detectors, glass break detectors, or any other device which may be securing your building.

Intrusion Alarm Devices

Your intrusion alarm works in tandem with many different devices to secure your building. These devices perform a variety of functions and they are designed to work together seamlessly to provide you with a security solution for your unique facility needs.
